Dan Zimmerman – Dreams of Earth (Sounds Familyre)
Greetings Good and Fare Folk, A glorious heap of wonderful new music is coming down the Sounds Familyre pike in 2014, including brand new releases from the wunderkind quartet Ortolan; fuzz rockers Octagrape (touring with Sebadoh right now); Jørn Oddvar Åleskjær (the John Denver of Norway); a new Danielson collaboration album (a secret for now, to be unveiled shortly), and much more! Kicking off the festivities is our elder statesman, Dan Zimmerman, one of the most extraordinary songwriters on God’s green earth. This is right and good. Dreams of Earthwill be released in the wide world on February 18, 2014 and Dan will be playing a handful of shows to celebrate. You can order the album now at the Sounds Familyre release page here or stream or buy a digital download now at spacepilgrim.bandcamp.com. With searching eyes that loom large behind impossibly thick bifocals, his voice is a canyon, as lonely and persistent as the river that carved it. Dan Zimmerman, the Dog-Man, the Cosmic Patriot, the Space Pilgrim, is both seer and seeker, an embracer of limitations and a big-hearted mystic. Zimmerman’s latest offering, Dreams of Earth, is the kind of work that exists only by a half-century spent listening and crafting songs. This kind of time ingrains in a man an understanding of how stories are told, of when to cut to the chase and when to linger on a word or a breath. His vision is one of clear-eyed reckoning with a broken world, tempered by the patient assurance that all will be well, as if to say “Be of good cheer. Wait with me…” His band-mates, his “compatriots” as he calls them, stand faithful to the heading of Zimmerman’s compass: that “spirit in the room” that characterized the great recordings of early rock n’ roll, when folks had to get it down in one take, before technology removed the obligation of listening to the person next to you. From the ethereal backing vocals of Elin K. Smith and Timothy Hill, to the sublime guitar work of Tony Jones and the rock-and-roll steady rhythm section, to the light but masterful production hand of Daniel C. Smith, the music is a call to the ineffable, but it is grounded. It grooves and it moves with earthiness, dust, and sweat. Zimmerman himself is in fine voice and his own guitar turns and lilts and hammers with subtlety and swagger. All is vibrant and immediate: the space between the notes is felt as strongly as the notes themselves. With heart strong and words warm, Zimmerman’s songs are a danger: protest songs raised against a passive dismissal of what heaven has pronounced good, against lack of engagement with the world as it exists here and now. His vision is of life and life shared. Zimmerman is the Space Pilgrim whose feet are planted on solid ground. Dan Zimmerman Dreams of Earth.

Messiah
We’re very happy to announce A Familyre Christmas Vol. 6, lovingly based on one of the most beautiful and enduring pieces of music in history: George Frederick Handel’s ‘The Messiah’.
Familyre’s Messiah – Part I is our humble re-imagining of the first 18 movements, which tells of unimaginable peace and goodwill toward humankind and the shattering of impassible cosmic barriers; all summed up with trademark angelic concision:
…and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’).
Indeed.
And with that, the music. We give you Familyre’s Messiah! Click on the cover below to listen!
Huge thanks to all the extraordinary artists who contributed: Scott Patrick Knies, Lenny Smith, Liz Janes, Danielson, Aglow Hollow, Lauryn Peacock, Rachel and Jon Galaxy, Frog In the Reeds, Gutter Sparrow, Dan Zimmerman, Glockenbass, Whitni and Aaron Roche, Ortolan, Half-handed Cloud, Soul-Junk, Elin K. Smith, Vesper, and Yours Truly (and to all their faithful musicians who lent massive talent and good humor to the endeavor). Thank you also to Ida Olivia Smith for the lovely cover art, to Daniel C. Smith for his steady and mighty hand at the helm, and finally to George Frederick Handel for creating such extraordinary music to respond to.
We sure hope you enjoy. It’s been a blast to put this together, and we’re so very glad to share it with you.
Last but not least, a reminder that all proceeds from the sale of Familyre’s Messiah and the Familyre Christmas Vol. 1-5 will be donated to The Red Cross for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. So listen, enjoy, buy, share, and lend a helping hand this Christmas!

FAQ: Will there be a Familyre Christmas Volume 6??
A: YES! All y’all are in for a treat. This year we’re doing something totally different! Totally exciting! Bizarre! Beautiful! Totally INSANE! We’re mounting the first half of Handel’s Messiah: 18 whole movements of Christmas story by a cheerful and motley crew of Familyre Artists and Friends. Yup. You read that right…Handel’s Messiah.
We’re pretty excited to share our take on this extraordinary piece of music. It’s been an undertaking and a half (George Frederick was no slouch), but such a treat to do. There will be all appropriate hoopla and dancing in the streets when it’s released to the wide world, so stay tuned!
